A Sober Train Ride: Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo

Back in May some friends and I set out on a simple but memorable adventure: a train ride from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo. With coastal views and enjoyable conversations, the trip was a reminder of how meaningful my sober friendships can be.

Our first stop in SLO was the peaceful Dallidet Gardens, where we wandered through blooming pathways and enjoyed a quiet break from the bustle of daily life. From there, we headed to Firestone Grill for a well-earned lunch of tri-tip sandwiches, fries, and plenty of laughter around the table. It was the perfect place for lunch, the food came quickly and we didn’t have to split the bill.

The afternoon was spent exploring downtown SLO, browsing shops, picking up small souvenirs (Aaron bought a CD) , and soaking in the lively atmosphere. No substances, no pressure—just good company and shared discovery. We checked out the gum wall too which was pretty gross.

By the time we boarded the train home, we felt grateful, grounded, and reminded that sobriety isn’t an end—it’s a beginning. These adventures show that joy, connection, and fun are not only possible in recovery, but abundant. More fun sober adventures are soon to come, please stay tuned!
