Finding Higher Ground: My Experience at the Serra Retreat
In March, I had the privilege of attending an AA men’s retreat at the Serra Franciscan monastery in Malibu. Perched high in the hills, the monastery carries a profound spiritual resonance—a quiet power that, almost immediately, began to shift my perspective on life.

The Power of Shared Experience
I’ll admit, as we wound our way up the canyon road, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I only knew that I was joining 24 other men to focus on our goal of recovery. What followed was a masterclass in the “Experience, Strength, and Hope”. Our days were structured around meditation and intensive breakout sessions, diving deep into the 12 Steps. Groups were formed by the simple draw of a card, a method that stripped away hierarchy and ego.
Watching the “ancient wisdom” of those with decades of sobriety pass down to those just beginning their journey was nothing short of incredible. In those rooms, age gaps evaporated. We were just men bound by a common solution.
A Shift in Perspective

Before this trip, I had my share of doubts. But sitting in that coastal landscape, surrounded by a brotherhood that truly understands both the struggle and the solution, the “why” of recovery became clear.
I walked away with a profound realization: Sobriety is not merely the absence of alcohol. It is a commitment to radical personal growth and a deep connection to a community. The friendships forged in those few days are the kind that last a lifetime.
Gratitude and Growth
This experience would not have been possible without the generosity of Discovery Recovery. Their contribution to the scholarship fund allowed me to access this vital level of support. It has been impressive to see Discovery Recovery evolve from a grassroots project into an ally of the recovery community, and testament to the good that is possible when we invest in one another.

The Path Forward
I am returning to my daily life in Santa Barbara with a clear mind and a full heart. The most powerful lesson I took home is that none of us have to do this alone. If you feel your relationship with alcohol is holding you back, I encourage you to reach out. Every transformative journey begins with a single, fresh step. Sometimes, those steps might even lead you to the hills of Malibu.
Thank you for being part of my journey.
